New Super Mario Bros. (DS): The One and Only Eternal Classic

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

How can the legendary Super Mario be in oblivion when other games are thronging the gaming market? The New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS Lite is a spectacle. The story line is as simple as it has been throughout the franchise and with time, the graphics have witnessed a sea of change. The princess gets kidnapped by Bowser Jr. and the onus is on Mario to do the rescue act. He does not have any special powers but kills his enemies by jumping on their heads. There are eight worlds in the game and the difficulty levels keep rising with each passing world. For those who have grown up playing Mario, blazing through all the worlds will be like walking in the park. Those playing it for the first time will thoroughly enjoy doing it.

There are underground stages and undersea stages apart from the desert and the ice world. The visuals are simply captivating and keep reminding you of those days when you played Mario on those simple consoles. New Super Mario Bros. DS will remind you of the days when those two buttons would be your only play option with one used for running and the other for jumping and spitting fireballs, when Mario got that ability. The walls can be used for sliding down. Mario grows up to completely occupy the screen when he consumes the mega mushrooms and runs through obstacles like a colossus. Buy it for the sake of its legacy and that being a gamer you would have also grown up on it. You can play it on the Nintendo DS and relive the old times.

Final Fantasy IV: Remake of the Classic on the DS

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Fifteen years ago this masterpiece took the world by storm. The new version for the Nintendo DS is a completely revamped version that re-masters the original Square Enix game and integrates updated graphics and detailed environments to recreate the franchise in form of the Final Fantasy IV.

The plot does away with the redundant story of battling the evil emperor to save the world. The characters are exposed to far more complex emotions and issues. Love, honour, hate, duty and betrayal are some of the aspects that have been etched into the game. Move through the Final Fantasy IV DS story as Cecil, a man weighed down by conflicting interests. Burdened by the aspects of right and wrong Cecil the Lord Captain of the Red Wings of Baron, now questions the crimes he has to commit in the name of his king. He is removed from his position and sent to the village of mist where his fate is shown to him. In the quest Cecil is joined by many captivating characters like Rosa his love, Tellah a sage consumed by revenge and Rydia a summoner with magical abilities. He has to face the menacing Golbez and his four lieutenants. Among these elemental henchmen is Rubicante who persists on healing you and then fighting you so that may face him with all your ability. The new customising option gives you the ability to augment your characters powers. These augments are placed throughout the game and if you seek hard enough you might be able to equip your character with dark powers like Cagnazzo’s tsunami attack. New cinematic cutscenes have been included along with full voice acting by the characters. However these dialogues are the weakest link in this formidable game and prove to be quite irksome.

This classic 3D version ups the graphical interface, improves the design, introduces new gameplay and in with an array of characters that have more depth transforms itself to emerge as an outstanding edition of the Final Fantasy franchise.

Frogger: Helmet Chaos, the Classic Returns

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

The classic game Frogger has been around for quite some time now. He is a part of many PC and console titles. Frogger: Helmet Chaos is offered by Konami both on consoles and portable systems. On the DS Lite, Frogger – Helmet Chaos is as entertaining as ever.

In this interesting game, Frogger and his friend Lumpy are fishing and Lumpy suddenly disappears. Whilst searching for Lumpy in Frogger: Helmet Chaos DS, Frogger finally finds him wearing a strange helmet, behaving strangely. As soon as the helmet is removed, Lumpy is back to his normal self and does not remember what exactly happened.

On their way back Frogger and Lumpy come across an acrobat from a traveling caravan Berry who is also looking for the rest of her troop who have gone strangely missing. Lumpy and Frogger find a pattern here and decide to investigate. In the process they find Dr. Wani, an evil crocodile who is trying to get them to do his bidding by placing them on the forest creatures.

The story goes through various cut scenes that make light of the silly story and are extremely well written. There are two modes for the gameplay namely the mini games and the story mode. Frogger is navigated through many areas in the story mode. Controls are simple and user friendly. Frogger is made to turn clockwise or anti clockwise with the help of the shoulder buttons and he can be moved around the area with the directional pad. Other interesting moves include the tongue grabs long jumps and vertical jumps.

It is possible to play the mini games as a single player or wireless multiplayer. Sound and graphics are definitely above average making this game extremely interesting and entertaining on your Nintendo DS.

Chrono Trigger DS: This Installment in the Classic Series is worth your Time

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

After almost fifteen years, the game Crono Trigger was brought to life by its developer Square Enix on the DS. In this interesting game, you are the Crono. At the onset of the game, you wake up at the 1000th anniversary of the Guardia Kingdom, in fact at the Millenial Fair. You are told by your mother that Lucca an inventor is waiting for you at the fair.

After playing around for some time, knocking over Marle, a blond girl making her pendant fall off from her neck, making up to her by showing her around, you come in contact with Lucca who is dying to show off her invention – a device that can teleport.

Seeing this for the first time, Crono jumps aboard and is immediately taken away from the fair. The machine called The Fly leaves some sparks and a lot of objects flying around during take off.

Thrilled with the success, Marle tries out the same thing and finds her pendant reacting strangely and she is sucked in to an era four hundred years ago. The entire sequence that follows involves Crono going on a journey of exciting magic, intrigue and time travel to find Marle. Constantly moving enemies and scattered characters provide for a better battle game play in Chrono Trigger. While the audio can be better, the cinematics is smooth. Sound track is a little distorted and not very clear. Arena the mini game offers a few thrills. Here, you are to give something to a monster you choose and ask it to train. You return after your adventure in the main game to find your monster at his job a little stronger. Use him to battle other monsters and win prizes you can take back to the main game.

This Chrono game is absolutely entertaining, especially for those who are playing it for the first time.

Chrono Trigger: Charged up emotions and testosterone

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Chrono Trigger, is a game that I don’t think needs any introduction. To be frank it is one of those cult games that have been fascinating gamers over and over again from the time it was first released 13 years ago. Chrono Trigger is essentially a time-travelling epic that has managed to captivate gamers with a fascinating combination of endearing characters and an enthralling story that took place throughout the ages.

As the title clearly indicates, Chrono is the main protagonist of the game. The game is based on the Kingdom of Guardia where people are gathering to commemorate its millennium anniversary. During the course of the celebrations Chrono meets a beautiful and hyperactive girl in the form of Marle, who persuades Chrono to show her around. Chrono was by now captivated by her charm and takes her to Lucas’s show following her request. But their fate takes an unexpected twist as an experimental teleportation device malfunction sends Marle through a rift in the space-time continuum. The rest of the story in Chrono Trigger is based on the unrelenting quest of Chrono to bring back lady charming from her tragic fate. It will not take you long to find out that this is going to be a long and arduous journey to prevent the looming gloom.

Chrono befriends many a guys along the way who helps him in his endeavor. Prime among them are heroic Frog, a medieval knight sworn to defeat the sinister Fiendlord, and Robo, a humanoid robot from the future with a penchant for gardening, et al. Displaying great comradeship they take on the evil forces with great gusto and finally manage to defeat the evil chieftain Lavos.

Chrono Trigger as a DS game is great fun, as it apart from bringing back that raw romanticism is also a superb combination of astute story telling and character development that is simply unlike any other game. The most important conclusion of the game is that you must have a heart of stone not to feel emotionally charged up as the game unfolds!

Play Arkanoid DS Style

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

If you enjoy controlling Vaus in the classical arcade games, then you can now experience the same fun on your DS Lite console. Developed by Taito, Arkanoid has proven itself to be a timeless game. The Arkanoid DS is the DS version of this action genre, which offers the original gameplay with all new features. Isn’t it great to have the traditional game in a new form? One of the most admirable features of Arkanoid DS is its attractive soundtrack by Zuntata, the award-winning team of Taito.

Gamers can play 140 different levels with an option of three different modes, specially designed to cater the different tastes. The vibrant colours of the environment actually make the collection of points much more interesting. The most outstanding part of the Arkanoid is, of course, the Clear mode of the Arkanoid, which takes the form of the Quest mode. For smooth and uninterrupted gameplay, it is better to avoid the D-pad and stick to the stylus. However, if you really miss the paddle, the only option for you is to import one. So if you have to hit the same blocks with the same bat, where is the difference? Actually, the real variation lies in the fast speed of Arkanoid DS.

Arkanoid DS is there to bring back the magic of the good old video game on your DS Lite screen. The game is as exciting as it used to be 20 years back and you will have great fun designing the block patterns at a faster pace.
