Chrono Trigger DS: This Installment in the Classic Series is worth your Time

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

After almost fifteen years, the game Crono Trigger was brought to life by its developer Square Enix on the DS. In this interesting game, you are the Crono. At the onset of the game, you wake up at the 1000th anniversary of the Guardia Kingdom, in fact at the Millenial Fair. You are told by your mother that Lucca an inventor is waiting for you at the fair.

After playing around for some time, knocking over Marle, a blond girl making her pendant fall off from her neck, making up to her by showing her around, you come in contact with Lucca who is dying to show off her invention – a device that can teleport.

Seeing this for the first time, Crono jumps aboard and is immediately taken away from the fair. The machine called The Fly leaves some sparks and a lot of objects flying around during take off.

Thrilled with the success, Marle tries out the same thing and finds her pendant reacting strangely and she is sucked in to an era four hundred years ago. The entire sequence that follows involves Crono going on a journey of exciting magic, intrigue and time travel to find Marle. Constantly moving enemies and scattered characters provide for a better battle game play in Chrono Trigger. While the audio can be better, the cinematics is smooth. Sound track is a little distorted and not very clear. Arena the mini game offers a few thrills. Here, you are to give something to a monster you choose and ask it to train. You return after your adventure in the main game to find your monster at his job a little stronger. Use him to battle other monsters and win prizes you can take back to the main game.

This Chrono game is absolutely entertaining, especially for those who are playing it for the first time.

What’s a name got to do with the game? Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

There was a time, especially in the late eighties and the early nineties, when Tecmo Bowl consistently used to be ranked among the top 25 games of the generation. The reason behind its gradual decline can be partly attributed to the fact that it is more of a celebratory, self-patting game and consequently lacked the arsenal to challenge games that offer more depth. Back in 1989 when it was first launched, it was quite a craze, as its design was competent enough to become the best football game of on the market. However, in today’s context it seems more of an archival game that is awaiting its time to bid adieu.

The latest offer from the series is the Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff and its design basically revolves on the Super Tecmo Bowl on the NES and Super NES, the ultimate success story of the series. The basic game play still remains the same and its taste may vary from individual to individual depending upon their perspectives. Lovers of the classic Tecmo Bowl experience should love this form also, as it is still pretty solid and simplistic. With very few rules regulating you from unabatedly indulging in this pick-up-and-play football, it can be quite rewarding. However, if you happen to be from the new school of thought who has grown up the 15 years of Madden, there is every possibility that Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff may leave you disturbed. With none of the sophisticated futures that are a part and parcel of the current generation football game, you will feel equally handicapped and frustrated. Take for instance, you cannot switch players during a play, or even employ a directional-aiming pass, which reaps a great deal of the suspense and enjoyment away.

You will nevertheless get a high in the form that each of the 32 teams in Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff is editable right down to the player themselves. Interestingly enough, you must be conservative in selecting names, and not try something like Matt Cassel, which contains the term “ass” in its surname! Funny no?

Play Arkanoid DS Style

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

If you enjoy controlling Vaus in the classical arcade games, then you can now experience the same fun on your DS Lite console. Developed by Taito, Arkanoid has proven itself to be a timeless game. The Arkanoid DS is the DS version of this action genre, which offers the original gameplay with all new features. Isn’t it great to have the traditional game in a new form? One of the most admirable features of Arkanoid DS is its attractive soundtrack by Zuntata, the award-winning team of Taito.

Gamers can play 140 different levels with an option of three different modes, specially designed to cater the different tastes. The vibrant colours of the environment actually make the collection of points much more interesting. The most outstanding part of the Arkanoid is, of course, the Clear mode of the Arkanoid, which takes the form of the Quest mode. For smooth and uninterrupted gameplay, it is better to avoid the D-pad and stick to the stylus. However, if you really miss the paddle, the only option for you is to import one. So if you have to hit the same blocks with the same bat, where is the difference? Actually, the real variation lies in the fast speed of Arkanoid DS.

Arkanoid DS is there to bring back the magic of the good old video game on your DS Lite screen. The game is as exciting as it used to be 20 years back and you will have great fun designing the block patterns at a faster pace.

The Seventh Edition of the Arcade Classic Metal Slug is coming soon to the DS Lite

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Originally developed by SNK and released on classic arcade machines, the Metal Slug series has since branched out with numerous sequels on practically every gaming platform, including the PS2, Xbox 360, GBA and DS Lite. As a pure run and gun game filled with action and adrenaline, the title is perfectly suited for handheld consoles, and Metal Slug 7 is in fact currently being exclusively developed for the Nintendo DS.

The first screenshots, downloads, trailers and other goodies for Metal Slug fans have been released as the website recently officially came online. The website includes exhaustive information on playable characters, including favourites from other Metal Slug titles, like Marco Rossi, Tarma Roving or Eri Kasamoto, but information on gameplay improvements and changes is still lacking. However, judging from the screenshots and trailers the graphics are at least top notch for a 2D game, while retaining the same old arcade feel. Fans of the addicting arcade classic can visit the brand new website to find out more, and take a look at the Japanese trailer posted above.

Peggle – 13 million + Points Shot

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Haven’t you gotten bored from continuously playing the same genre of games? Why not try something different for a change? Well not to worry, as Peggle is coming to rescue you and it is about as different as it comes. Popcap has developed the game –Peggle for Nintendo DS which is going to be released later this year. It features a colorful 2D background filled with different colored ‘pegs’.

The game is anything but easy. It will require you to create a strategy to bounce the ball off pegs and many other hurdles, in order to clear all of the orange pegs in the level with a specific number of balls. The player gets awarded with an extra ball by the “free ball bucket” if he gets the previous ball shot perfectly. Apart from orange pegs, it has loads of blue, green and purple colored pegs as well. The game on the DS Lite Console has many different modes to play in like adventure, quick play, duel, challenge, peggle master, peggle grandmaster and extreme grandmaster.

Each time the peg gets hit during a single ball shot, the player is awarded with points. So Nintendo buffs get ready to gain some brownie points this winter.
