DS Scrabble Scandal: Computer used words like ‘Tits’ and ‘F**kers’ to beat 8 Year Old

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

scrabble-ds-lite-nintendo-words-game1.gif

We’ve all known scrabble to produce some unheard of and strange words, like ‘Quixotry’ or ‘Vrow’, that we swear aren’t really part of the English language; but everyone has heard of the latest words coming from DS Scrabble that are causing uproar. A mother, Mrs. Carrington, is furious after the computer beat her 8 year old son, Ethan, in DS scrabble by using such clever words as ‘tits’, ‘shit’, ‘toke’ and finally ‘fuckers’.

It gets better, since DS Scrabble is obviously an educational game as well, definitions are included for all the words: the plural noun ‘fuckers’ is defined as ‘a slang term for chavs’, while ‘toke’ was appropriately defined as ‘a draw on a cannabis cigarette’. This was clearly not the educational value the mother who purchased DS Scrabble for her 8 year old son was looking for.

Searching for someone to blame over this scandal, the concerned mother quickly contacted the shop where she bought the game from, Asda, who then referred her to Nintendo. Nintendo refused to accept any liability for the situation and then passed her on to the game’s publisher Ubisoft, who then referred her to the Pan European Game Information video game rating company, which had rated DS Scrabble as appropriate for everyone aged 3 and older. Of course, she has not heard back from them since emailing three months ago, and we wonder whether any action will be taken. For his part, Ethan mentioned that he still loves Scrabble and was disappointed his mum said he couldn’t play it anymore because of the inappropriate words.

DS lite New Model Prediction Goes Bust: Change is Not always Necessary

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

You heard of the rumors doing the rounds after the chief of Enterbrain, Hirokazy Hamamura made a statement recently about the possibility of a new Nintendo DS lite that is going to be revealed.

However, there was a firm denial from the Nintendo camp about it and has specifically stated that there wouldn’t be any such thing happening.

According to the sources:

“We cannot comment on the specifics of what will be announced at E3, but at the very least there won’t be anything like what Mr. Hamamura suggested, so would like to clearly deny this. We’re having a hard time understanding what kind of evidence [Mr. Hamamura] had for saying this,” said Nintendo Japan’s head of PR in a press statement.”

Nintendo’s denial would appear to have like hurling a bucket of cold water at hamamura’s prediction, but the prediction is not bad after all, given the fact that the DS lite so popular

Whoa… A new Nintendo DS model?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

E3This is still largely unsubstantiated and yet too exciting to pass off as a rumor online. World-wide, the Nintendo DS fans are all hyped up about the possibility of getting their hands on to the a new handheld console at the gaming expo E3.

Apparently, it is being rumored now that the Nintendo will unveil the next-generation DS at E3 2008 this summer, two years after the launch of the DS Lite and four years after the original DS launched.

However, the actual data isn’t here and the web is rife with speculation. Here’s a report from 1up.com:

Bloomberg Japan reports that Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Japanese magazine publisher Enterbrain (parent company of Famitsu), has stated that he believes Nintendo will show a new model of the Nintendo DS at the E3 Media Summit this July (via Shacknews).

Since this report comes via second-hand translation of a Japanese story, there are a couple of key things that aren’t entirely clear. For one, it’s hard to say whether Hamamura was merely speculating on what may happen or if he has any sort of information he’s basing this on. Also unclear is whether he means another update to the current DS, like the DS Lite, or if he means the next generation of the DS hardware (Nintendo DS 2, if you will).
When Bloomberg Japan contacted Nintendo, they were evidently told Nintendo was unable to comment at the time. With the rate at which DSes burn through retail, both in Japan and in North America, it’s hard to imagine Nintendo would be readying its successor already. A new model wouldn’t be out of the realm of their track record (Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance SP, Game Boy Advance Micro, DS Lite…), but for now, it’s better to regard this one with healthy skepticism until more concrete info surfaces.

It is going to be a fest if this is correct information – there are loads of takers and better things to come our way then.

DS Lite and what it did to your tiny little hands

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

fall in love with ds liteIt got them busy, that’s what. The DS lite is an ultra addictive addiction now seen in the hands of many a young game enthusiasts and it no wonder then that it is beginning to seep into the very psyche of people’s mindsets. It seems to have grown from the stage of “something for people to do when they are bored” to “This is my way of life; you go define yours”. It is now filling up a void that the ubiquitous PC could not really encroach into—the warm space in the hands of people when they aren’t talking on phones or not dabbling with their personal computers.

DS lite is a welcome addition and is quite a replacement when it comes to Sony’s PSP simply because of its small size; doable form factor, the innovative touch screen abilities and with great games to boot. Well, the screen resolution isn’t really something you ought to clap hands for, when compared to the Sony PSP but then, look at the sheer number of games you can pick from.

ds liteAll the way from the addictive Picross to the scary Dementium: The Ward, you have no dearth of games to keep you up in the night.

DS lite is indeed a hand-filler — a machine that can fill the void that has been left by the omnipresent PC and the addictive cell phones.

Next Generation DS Lite on the way?

Monday, April 14th, 2008

ds-lite.jpg

Are we finally there? Have we reached the point where the handheld console is ready to be taken to the next level? The Nintendo DS was released in 2004, the DS lite in 2006, and now, at least according to Hirokazu Hamamura, president of the game magazine publisher Enterbrain, Nintendo’s next generation handheld is on the horizon. He maintains the DS lite is ready for a successor and that Nintendo will announce one at this year’s upcoming E3 gaming conference in July.

Will Hamamura’s forecast come true and is it based on special insider information at Nintendo? Nintendo has so far declined to comment, but Hamamura’s remarks seem to have had the effect of stirring up the guess work among the gaming press. In fact, given the two year release span between the DS and DS lite, a 2008 release seems highly probable. Several gaming websites have followed suite with Hamamura’s notions and are even hypothesizing what the next-gen handheld would be called. So far names such as the “Extreme” or the “Liter” have been circulating.

While Nintendo has had unprecedented success with their handheld DS lite models, with sales totalling over 45 million units sold world wide, recent statistics in Japan show Sony’s PSP actually outselling the Nintendo model. Perhaps this will be the best indication of Nintendo’s desire to develop a next generation model.

Nintendo DS pipped by PSP!

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

yellow nintendo ds liteNintendo still rules as sales figures roll in from Japan. The creators of the super successful Zelda and Mario series have continually pipped competitors Sony PSP and Microsoft Xbox for the top spot since Wii was released. However, not all things Nintendo are retaining the top spot. Nintendo DS Lite was enjoying a clean run in the portable game console war except for a minor upset briefly in autumn last year.

Two years down the line now and the Nintendo DS Lite has had its latest brush with competition of the fiercest kind – The handheld PSP has overtaken sales in Japan for the first time in 2008. So what made this happen you may wonder? The Monster Hunter game and some high intense advertising from Sony on Japanese TV are reasons why!

The Nintendo DS scores high on design against the Sony PSP portable - the design is much better looking and you can play a wider variety of games on the DS than the PSP. Finally, it all boils down to personal choice and what makes you happy but its strike one for the Sony PSP portable for the time being and we can all expect some sure-fire retaliatory action from Nintendo to regain its top honours soon. Are you Nintendo guys salivating?

For now DS owners can send in their DS consoles to ColorWare to get then painted into any color of your choice garish or otherwise all for $99. Check out ColorWare for their palette of choices.
