Di-Gata Defenders: Traditional RPG on the DS

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Di-Gata Defenders is a traditional RPG game with side quests, equipments, turn-based battles and just about everything you can find in an RPG formula. You are a mysterious person on a quest to save the world. Introduction of the game is ineffective and pseudo-anime. High octane techno music keeps you waiting eagerly for exciting action.

However, as you continue to wait through the game, excitement eludes you. Characters are customizable. You can customize the clothing, stats and even the face. There are various sigils named Yin, Yan, Ogama and Infinis. Stats can be customized by choosing one of the sigils. All standbys of the RPG are covered by boost in the status such as stamina, knowledge, HP, defense, etc offered by each sigil. The introduction to the characters in Di-Gata Defenders DS is confusing as characters are simply thrown at you. This is a severe contrast to the general RPGs which introduce the player to the story in a gradual and simple manner.

In the wild, as you walk around, there are no random battles. You can see the monsters walking around. Turn based strategy allows you to summon, attack and defend. Story is about finding a precious artefact that has been stolen by a thief. As you progress through the story, complete side quests to summon defenders. With a bad sound track and poor graphics, this game of Di-Gata Defenders is quite a badly made RPG for the Nintendo DS. For those who simply love acting detective and finding the thief, they can maybe have some fun hunting for the artifact.

Dragon Quest V – the Hand of the Heavenly Bride on the Nintendo DS

Monday, March 30th, 2009

The Dragon Quest series has been almost revered in Japan though it did not meet with as much success in the West. Dragon Quest V with the subtitle The Hand of the Heavenly Bride comes as the latest version to Nintendo DS.

First look at this game indicates there is a host of difference in the presentation as compared to the earlier versions like Dragon Quest IV: The Chosen Ones. The visuals in Dragon Quest V are stunning and realistic. Environment is featured with faux 3D worlds on the 2D sprites. An interesting additional feature is that players can rotate the camera all through 360 degrees. Journey takes you through wonderful and colourful visual art. Sound track is similar to the past versions. In this remake, it is finally the design and the story that take the cake.

Another interesting fact is that in the Heavenly Bride, the story takes you through the entire life of the character, not just a particular period. This is something rare in games. It is always fun to be a part of the life of a boy who makes his way through life and emerges a hero. The whole sequence of events is interesting and may a times keeps you guessing as it takes you through various circumstances.

The design of the Square Enix game has been expertly incorporated into the storyline. There are even instances where you look back when you go to a particular place on the time when you were there last. This game is clearly one of the best and interesting RPG games on the DS Lite.

Legacy of Ys: Books I & II on the Nintendo DS

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Legacy of YS: Books I & II is an action packed game released more than a decade ago. The story of the Atlus game revolves around books that talk about the land of Ys. Adol is the hero who finds himself washed ashore an island. This adventurer discovers that the island is completely cut off from the world. He ventures rescuing the residents of the island who themselves are stranded. For this he must first find the solution to the problem which can be found in a book. During his quest, he encounters several thieves, monsters and goddesses.

The progression of characters and leveling in the Nintendo DS game is very RPG like. As you play the game, you find that the difficulty in killing your enemies is alternately hot and cold. For instance, without leveling enough to combat an enemy, you just constantly slash away trying to hit the point of damage and dying many times. As you progress to the next level however, you find that you are able to cause damage effortlessly to the once unconquerable enemies and the whole exercise becomes easy. Consistency in the difficulty levels could have made the whole venture more interesting.

Compared to the past versions, there is no significant change in the game except for the graphics. As for the graphics, they are mostly the kind of Japanese animation typical of other Atlus games like Luminous Arc. The excellent soundtrack included in Legacy of Ys has also been retained from the older version which is a relief. The game could have scored better with a little update on the gameplay. However, for all those fans of Ys, this is a nice enough game to play on your favourite DS Lite.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time Updated Hands-On Review

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Echoes of Time play well on both the Nintendo Wii and on the DS. Both versions come with four player options. In this wonderful role playing game from Square Enix, you as a player start by creating your own characters and naming them. There are four different tribes you choose from namely the Lilty, Selkie, Clavat and Yuke. You can also choose from the two gender variations. Yuke here is a humanoid who is winged as well as masked and the other three are adorable warrior children with cherub like features.

Characters themselves come with various special attributes. Yuke comes equipped with amazing magic skills and Lilties are extremely good wielders of spear. Theme of the story is similar in line to the usual Final Fantasy series specialty, coming-of-age. As you turn 16, you are considered to be old enough to be sent on your first quest. Here you get a taste of the real life combat system of the game. User friendly controls add to the fun as you just use four primary buttons namely pick up objects, jump, attack and cast spells.

When you return successfully after your first quest, you find one of your villagers’ ill attacked by crystal sickness, a mysterious disease. A freshly returned hero, you venture finding a cure for this disease taking you from your small little village to a bigger and busier town. In Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time you heroically go around offering various services and collecting a crew of adventurers. With the help of a researcher in the local library, you are again sent on a quest to find a solution to the disease and there is a lot of excitement and fun along the way.
