Anguna: Warriors of Virtue — A worthy Homebrew for your DS

Monday, May 19th, 2008

image0011.jpg

Some Homebrews for the Nintendo DS lite never make it anywhere except for the developer’s portfolio. However, there are some that make it there, at least for a worthy honorable mention. Anguna has now made a few eye-brows go up and has certainly brought back the old school charm.

DSfanboy made a mention of it recently saying:

It’s not every day you get surprise homebrew releases like this! Anguna: Warriors of Virtue is a complete action-adventure game for the GBA, boasting five dungeons, unique enemies and bosses, and an expansive over world. Hidden rooms, secrets, and special weapons — bear traps, dynamite, and more — are scattered around Aguna. It’s all the work of a single programmer (with sprites provided by Chris Hildenbrand), Nathan Tolbert, who labored over the game as a hobby for the past three years.

While some games leave you spoilt by having told you every thing that you need to do in the game and also the specifics of game play, there are some — like Anguna: Warriors of virtue — that you will need to figure out everything while you play, much like an RPG.

Again from DSfanboy:

Very much inspired by the original The Legend of Zelda, Anguna is an old-school experience that doesn’t hold your hand whatsoever. Other than a few sentences to set the plot and a sword, you aren’t given much to work with. After you fight your way through the introduction dungeon, you’ll need to explore the over world for a while before figuring out where to head next.

Very much worth a try and an amazing homebrew to start your lazy days with. Play with quite some time on your hands, because it isn’t a just shoot-the-aliens game.

Kung Fu Panda on your DS: The Preview

Monday, May 19th, 2008

image0012.png

What do you get when the mascot of the World Wildlife Fund takes to martial arts? You would come up with Kung Fu Panda, that’s what! And no, it isn’t the movie we are talking about. It is the game!

The game is due to be released in June for the DS lite and actually plays out like a 2D side-scrolling action game. As the name suggests, it is all about the ancient art of Kung Fu replayed with a modern touch screen and vigorously at that. The main character is none other than the super fit, fighting master Po, who is of course also a panda. The game is wholly playable with the stylus and truly uses this technology to its advantage.

Pocket Gamer neatly summarizes the nature of the play:

“Tap an enemy and Po quickly grabs them, at which point you can flick the stylus in any direction to throw their body. Slide the stylus through a foe and Po executes a martial arts blow. Naturally, new touch-enabled attacks become available as you progress through the game’s approximately dozen levels.

The fighting is often also tied to puzzles and plat forming. It’s not uncommon to have to clear a room of enemies before a door opens or item appears. In one area, conjuring a switch to unlock a nearby door required skinning a trio of standing crocodiles. A few swipes and a couple of slashes made luggage of the foes, opening the way to the rest of the level. Another puzzle had Po activating a series of switches in order to clear a path. One switch opened access to a second switch that fired a spear. That spear conveniently killed a crocodile standing on a third switch. With the scaly dude dead, the switch was released and the door lifted”

Kung Fu Panda isn’t something that you’d have to kill for and it isn’t bringing you something you have never seen before — but then, the way you operate is certainly novel with the stylus inputs and the plat forming. The game promises to be one of the best movies related- games ever and this year certainly promises to be fun.
