The Nintendo DS isn’t just for kids, try this for proof!

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

If you thought that the Nintendo DS is only for those mini-games and kids alone, you are going to bit the edges of your seats with Dementium: The ward. For all those people who can’t do without the thrill and nail-biting excitement that comes from those creaking sounds and the terrifying on the face thrusts of some real ugly zombie characters – This is the game that can push into the dark corners of the gaming fantasy world.

The game is a first-shooter, action thriller come adventure fantasy with loads of special effects and incredible graphics, aimed at the rebels; the renegades and the off-minded adventure seeking adrenaline enthusiasts. Combined with the possibility of the touch-screen properties of the Nintendo DS lite, it gives the player a feeling of being “in possession” of the fantasy – an experience that can come as close to “real time” as possible what with real time flash light which makes it all feel real for the players – musty walls, eerie surroundings and a hair-raising plot.

Talking about the plot briefly, it is basically about a man who wakes up in the throes of a deserted hospital, haunted by some mysterious ‘surgical mistakes’ and to his horror he realizes that he needs to play against the odds to get out of the hospital safe – a dear run for his life.

Next Generation DS Lite on the way?

Monday, April 14th, 2008

ds-lite.jpg

Are we finally there? Have we reached the point where the handheld console is ready to be taken to the next level? The Nintendo DS was released in 2004, the DS lite in 2006, and now, at least according to Hirokazu Hamamura, president of the game magazine publisher Enterbrain, Nintendo’s next generation handheld is on the horizon. He maintains the DS lite is ready for a successor and that Nintendo will announce one at this year’s upcoming E3 gaming conference in July.

Will Hamamura’s forecast come true and is it based on special insider information at Nintendo? Nintendo has so far declined to comment, but Hamamura’s remarks seem to have had the effect of stirring up the guess work among the gaming press. In fact, given the two year release span between the DS and DS lite, a 2008 release seems highly probable. Several gaming websites have followed suite with Hamamura’s notions and are even hypothesizing what the next-gen handheld would be called. So far names such as the “Extreme” or the “Liter” have been circulating.

While Nintendo has had unprecedented success with their handheld DS lite models, with sales totalling over 45 million units sold world wide, recent statistics in Japan show Sony’s PSP actually outselling the Nintendo model. Perhaps this will be the best indication of Nintendo’s desire to develop a next generation model.

ghostbusters
“If there’s something strange in the neighborhood, who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!” Ghostbusters - the catchy song and phrase, unforgettable and fresh as it was in the eighties is on its way into being out as a new game for gaming consoles including the Nintendo DS Lite. Oh oh! The song is already in my head now and will go on for a day or two.

Ghostbusters for DS Lite will be out during this spring in the US and is being developed by Terminal Reality for Sierra Entertainment. The whole gang of Ghostbusters will be back. Check out here http://www.ghostbustersgame.com/ for the new official website released yesterday - looks promising and interesting. This time an all-new story and guess what it is by the original writers of Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.

This time Manhattan is under siege and you are the new recruit to join the original team in busting some slimy spooks and rid New York of this attack. Ghostbusters is famous for its weapons and gadgets and you can be sure to have some funny thrilling times in the game. Watch this clip for what gaming editors feel about this next gen version of Ghostbusters.

Don’t you think it is really cool for actors like Bill Murray, Rick Moranis, Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd to continue looking young and skippy in games? Ghostbusters the movie, created a cult following and a lot of people are eagerly awaiting this game on the DS Lite. So are you recuiting?

Nintendo DS pipped by PSP!

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

yellow nintendo ds liteNintendo still rules as sales figures roll in from Japan. The creators of the super successful Zelda and Mario series have continually pipped competitors Sony PSP and Microsoft Xbox for the top spot since Wii was released. However, not all things Nintendo are retaining the top spot. Nintendo DS Lite was enjoying a clean run in the portable game console war except for a minor upset briefly in autumn last year.

Two years down the line now and the Nintendo DS Lite has had its latest brush with competition of the fiercest kind – The handheld PSP has overtaken sales in Japan for the first time in 2008. So what made this happen you may wonder? The Monster Hunter game and some high intense advertising from Sony on Japanese TV are reasons why!

The Nintendo DS scores high on design against the Sony PSP portable - the design is much better looking and you can play a wider variety of games on the DS than the PSP. Finally, it all boils down to personal choice and what makes you happy but its strike one for the Sony PSP portable for the time being and we can all expect some sure-fire retaliatory action from Nintendo to regain its top honours soon. Are you Nintendo guys salivating?

For now DS owners can send in their DS consoles to ColorWare to get then painted into any color of your choice garish or otherwise all for $99. Check out ColorWare for their palette of choices.

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Normally in life we are told not cheat. Cheating is bad. Plus you sometimes have to try hard not to get caught. But cheating does have its advantages; like flying in Super Mario 64 DS, or having infinite lives. Thanks to Action Replay DS, cheating is both incredibly easy and enjoyable. The accompanying review by TweeterMan shows a step by step guide on how to get started with the Action Replay and where to get cheat codes. He also does a great job articulating some of the strengths and weaknesses of the Action Replay DS, in addition to showing it in action. Never lose to that boss again.

Insecticide: Should it be Squashed?

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Insecticide for the DS Lite might have had the potential to be a fun game, with its wacky character models and amusing setting, but unfortunately it falls way short. Rather than being a game with a few glitches or annoyances that need to be ironed out, the game itself is poorly designed, with monotonous gameplay. The levels are more or less all the same, and the controls are incredibly slow. Aside from the promising idea of playing as a bug detective with a roach partner in an insect world, the game has little staying power. Scott does a good job articulating the game’s flaws in his video and proves that bugs are meant to be squashed.
